In the Las Vegas Valley, when you trim a tree matters almost as much as how you trim it. A cut that does no harm in January can stress the same tree in July. Pruning on the wrong schedule can waste money and leave a tree weaker going into wind season.

Here’s how we time trimming for the trees we work on most across Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas.

Why Timing Matters in the Mojave Desert

Trees here deal with conditions most pruning guides don’t account for:

  • Extreme summer heat. Long stretches over 100°F already stress trees. Removing a lot of canopy in summer exposes bark that was shaded and can lead to sunscald.
  • Spring winds and summer monsoon storms. Weak, overextended, or dead limbs are the first to fail.
  • Short winter cold snaps. Occasional freezes affect palms and other cold-sensitive trees.

Leaves are how a tree makes its food. The best time to remove them is when the tree can recover easily, and before the weather puts extra strain on weak branches.

A Season-by-Season Trimming Calendar

Winter (December–February): Best for Most Shade Trees

Late winter is the best window for deciduous trees that drop their leaves. That includes mulberry, ash, Chinese pistache, elm, sycamore, and most fruit trees. With the leaves off, we can see the tree’s whole structure. That makes it easier to remove crossing branches, thin the crown, and correct weak growth. The tree is dormant, so it handles cuts well. Finishing the work before spring growth and wind season is a big advantage.

Spring (March–May): Inspections, Light Work, and Wind Prep

Spring is a good time to walk your property after windy days. Dead, broken, or hanging limbs should come out in any season. Before cutting into a dense canopy, check for active bird nests, which are protected under federal law. Late spring is also when palm trimming season begins.

Summer (June–September): Palms Yes, Heavy Shade Pruning No

Summer is prime time for palms. They handle heat well, and trimming before or as seed pods and flower stalks form keeps the mess and the pest habitat down. See our palm tree trimming service for what’s included.

For shade trees, keep summer work light. Removing dead wood or clearing a roofline is fine. Heavy thinning or large cuts in July and August add stress when the tree has the least to spare. After monsoon storms, check for cracked or hanging limbs.

Fall (October–November): Pines, Evergreens, and Planning

Late fall into winter is a good time to prune pines and other evergreens. The cooler weather is easier on the tree, and bark beetles are less active. Fall is also the right time to schedule winter pruning, before the busy season fills up.

When You Shouldn’t Wait for the “Right” Season

Some problems can’t wait for the ideal month. Call a professional right away if you notice:

  • A dead or cracked limb over your roof, pool, driveway, or walkway
  • A tree that has started to lean, or soil lifting around its base
  • Branches touching or close to power lines
  • Storm damage with limbs hanging in the canopy

Stay clear of power lines and don’t try to cut near them yourself. Branches in contact with lines need a utility or qualified line-clearance crew. If a tree is dead or failing, trimming may not be enough. Our guide to dead and pine tree removal in Las Vegas covers the warning signs, and our tree removal service handles the jobs that can’t be saved.

Trimming Mistakes We See Around the Valley

Topping Trees

Cutting a tree’s main branches back to stubs leads to weak, fast-growing sprouts. It usually means more pruning, not less, and it can shorten the tree’s life.

Over-Trimming Palms

Stripping a palm down to a few fronds at the top, sometimes called a “hurricane cut,” removes green fronds the palm needs for food and protection. A properly trimmed palm keeps a full, rounded head of healthy fronds. Read more in our palm tree trimming and maintenance guide.

Removing Too Much at Once

As a general rule, avoid taking out more than about a quarter of a tree’s live canopy in one season. Big corrections are safer spread over a few years.

Heavy Pruning in Peak Heat

Large cuts in July and August expose bark to direct sun when the tree is already stressed. Save structural work for winter.

A Tip for HOAs and Property Managers

If you manage a community or commercial property, a simple two-part schedule works well for most sites:

  • Winter: structural pruning for shade trees and clearance over sidewalks, streets, and parking areas
  • Late spring to summer: palm trimming, including seed pods and flower stalks

Planning one walkthrough per season makes it easier to budget, notify residents, and keep common areas safe and consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to trim trees in Las Vegas?

For most deciduous shade trees, late December through February is best. The trees are dormant, the structure is easy to see, and the work is done before spring winds.

Can I trim my palm trees in winter?

It’s better to wait until late spring or summer. You can remove fully dead or hanging fronds anytime, but leave the green ones in place. They help protect the palm during cold snaps.

Is it bad to trim trees in the summer in Las Vegas?

Light trimming, like removing dead branches or clearing a roof, is fine. Heavy pruning in July and August adds stress and can expose bark to sunscald, so save major cuts for winter.

How often should my trees be trimmed?

Most mature shade trees need trimming every few years. Young trees benefit from more frequent light pruning to build good structure. Most palms look and perform best when trimmed about once a year.

When should I hire a professional instead of trimming myself?

Hire a professional for any work above ladder height, large limbs, branches near power lines, or a tree over a house or pool. Those jobs need the right equipment and experience to be done safely.
